A private tour does not always mean a different itinerary.
Sometimes the private and group versions follow the same roads, take the same amount of time and visit almost the same places. The extra money goes elsewhere: hotel pickup, a dedicated vehicle and guide, or extras such as a local 4×4, tastings or entrance tickets.
So the useful comparison is not $25 versus $145. It is the full cost of the same day for the same number of travellers.
The prices below were checked on September 25, 2026. Group tours are priced per person. Private tours show a published starting price, but the pages do not clearly explain how that price changes for two or four guests. Treat the private figure as a starting point, not a guaranteed final quote.

Three routes at a glance
| Route | Group option | Private option | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kazbegi | Gamarjoba — Kazbegi Group: from $25 per person + 20 GEL for the Gergeti 4×4, about $32.63 total per person | Gamarjoba — Kazbegi Private: from $145; 12 hours, hotel-to-hotel, private transport, certified private guide, Gergeti 4×4 included | For 4 travellers, the group total is about $130.51, bringing it close to the published private starting price |
| Kakheti | Gamarjoba — Kakheti Group: from $39 per person; about $40.14 with bread and cheese; 9 tastings | Gamarjoba — Kakheti Private: from $130; hotel pickup, private guide, bread and cheese, 8 explicitly listed wines included | The route and duration are almost the same; the premium is mainly for privacy and pickup, not extra places |
| Mtskheta–Gori–Uplistsikhe | Gamarjoba — Mtskheta, Gori & Uplistsikhe Group: from $29 per person + 15 GEL Uplistsikhe + 15 GEL Stalin Museum, about $40.44 per person with both | Gamarjoba — Mtskheta, Gori & Uplistsikhe Private: from $140; hotel pickup, private guide, both entrance tickets included | For 4 travellers, the group total with both entrances is about $161.77, although the exact private price for four is not published |
Conversions use the National Bank of Georgia rate from the research date: $1 = 2.6218 GEL.
Kazbegi: the $25 headline is not the whole day
The Gamarjoba Kazbegi group tour covers Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri, Gudauri, Stepantsminda and Gergeti. It lasts 10 hours 30 minutes and starts at Avlabari Metro.
The advertised price is from $25 per person.
But the ride from Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church costs another 20 GEL per person, cash only.
If Gergeti is part of the reason you are taking the trip, the real starting cost is therefore about $32.63 per person.
The private version starts from $145, lasts 12 hours and begins and ends at your hotel. A private vehicle, certified private guide and the local Gergeti 4×4 are included.
For one traveller, the group option is far cheaper.
For a couple, the same is true: roughly $65.26 total versus a private starting price of $145.
With four people, the calculation changes. The group tour plus Gergeti 4×4 reaches about $130.51, leaving only about $14.49 between it and the published private starting price.
That does not prove the private tour will actually cost $145 for four adults. The page does not confirm that.
It does mean this is the point where asking for the private quote starts to make sense.
For a route-level breakdown of what private Kazbegi tours actually include, see our private Kazbegi day-trip guide.
Kakheti: sometimes the premium does not buy a different route
The Kakheti group tour and the private version both last 10 hours.
Both include Badiauri, Bodbe, Sighnaghi, a family winery and KTW.
So the private version is not buying another region or a longer day.
The group tour starts from $39 per person and includes nine tastings. Bread and cheese in Badiauri cost another 3 GEL; lunch is separate.
The private tour starts from $130 and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a private vehicle and certified guide, bread and cheese, three wines at the family winery and five wines at KTW. Lunch is not included.
For a couple, the group option with bread and cheese comes to about $80.29.
That leaves the private starting price at least about $50 higher.
What does that premium buy?
Mostly privacy, hotel pickup and a guide dedicated to your party — not more sightseeing.
For four people, however, the same group trip reaches about $160.58.
At that point a private tour starting from $130 looks much more interesting, although again the final private quote for four people needs to be confirmed.
Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe: entrance tickets matter too
The group tour and the private tour both last 10 hours and cover Uplistsikhe, Gori, Jvari and Mtskheta.
The group tour starts from $29 per person.
On top of that:
- Uplistsikhe costs 15 GEL
- the Stalin Museum costs another 15 GEL if you choose to visit
- lunch is separate
The private tour starts from $140 and includes hotel pickup, private transport, a certified private guide and both entrance tickets.
If you want both paid attractions, the group option comes to about $40.44 per person, or around $161.77 for four people.
If you do not want the Stalin Museum, the group tour becomes cheaper.
That is an important point: more included is only better when you actually wanted those inclusions.
What the private premium actually buys
Across these three comparisons, the private upgrade buys five clearly documented things:
- hotel pickup and drop-off instead of meeting at Avlabari Metro
- a vehicle reserved for your party
- a private certified guide
- some extras bundled into the price, such as the Gergeti 4×4, tastings or entrance tickets
- in Kazbegi, a 12-hour day instead of 10 hours 30 minutes
What the pages do not promise is unlimited freedom to redesign the itinerary.
A private vehicle does not automatically mean an open-ended day.
If you want a later departure, a long lunch, an extra stop or more time somewhere specific, confirm that before paying.
When a group tour is hard to beat
If you are travelling solo or as a couple, the group option is substantially cheaper in all three examples.
It is especially attractive when:
- the meeting point is convenient
- the published itinerary already suits you
- sharing a guide is not a problem
- keeping the cost per person low matters more than having a private vehicle
Kakheti is a particularly clear example because the group and private tours are almost identical in duration and major stops.
When private starts to deserve a quote
The most interesting point is around four travellers.
Group pricing multiplies with every passenger. Private tours are advertised with one starting figure.
In Kazbegi, that makes the gap almost disappear.
In Kakheti and on the Mtskheta–Gori–Uplistsikhe route, the normalized group total for four is already above the published private starting price.
That is not proof that private wins.
It simply means you should stop comparing headline prices and ask for the final private quote.
A private tour also becomes easier to justify when:
- hotel pickup saves meaningful time or hassle
- you want a guide dedicated to your group
- you prefer to have Gergeti transport, tastings or entrance tickets wrapped into one booking
Quick decision guide
Travelling alone or as a couple?
Start with the group option.
Four people?
Price both.
Gergeti is essential?
Add 20 GEL per person to the Kazbegi group tour, or choose a package where the local 4×4 is included.
Kakheti matters more than privacy?
Compare the wineries and tastings, not just the word “private.”
Want Uplistsikhe and the Stalin Museum?
Include both entrance fees in the group total.
Need control over the pace or stops?
Do not assume “private” guarantees it. Ask before booking.
Bottom line
For one traveller or a couple, group tours usually win on simple arithmetic.
For four people, the picture changes quickly. Group prices multiply per person, while included 4×4 transport, tickets and tastings can narrow the gap with private tours.
So the real question is not:
“Which is better, private or group?”
It is:
“What exactly am I getting for the extra money, and what does that cost for my group?”
Match the same day first — route, hours, pickup, guide and required extras.
Then compare the price.
