Flying out of Tbilisi International Airport is usually straightforward. The important part is arriving with enough time for the steps that apply to you.
For most international passengers, the sequence is simple: arrive at the airport → check in or drop your bag → security → passport control → find your gate → board.
Tbilisi Airport recommends arriving 2 hours before departure. International check-in desks usually open 3 hours before departure and close 60 minutes before departure. Your airline can set different deadlines, so its instructions take priority.

Flying soon? Check these five things first
- Confirm your flight time and airline.
- Check whether online check-in is available.
- Know whether you have a bag to check.
- Keep your passport, boarding pass and any destination documents ready.
- Plan transport so you reach the terminal with time left for security and passport control.
The main mistake is treating the check-in closing time as your target arrival time. A desk closing 60 minutes before departure does not leave a comfortable hour: you may still have baggage, security, passport control and the walk to your gate ahead of you.
How early should you arrive?
The airport’s official recommendation is 120 minutes before your flight. Treat that as a useful baseline, not a guarantee that every passenger needs exactly two hours.
If you are already checked in, have only hand luggage and know the airport routine, your process can be shorter. If you need to check a bag, travel with children, require assistance, have unusual travel documents or simply prefer a larger buffer, allow more time.
Most importantly, check the deadline provided by your airline. Airline rules can override the airport’s general guidance.

What happens when you enter the departure hall?
Do not join the first queue you see. Look at the flight information screens, find your flight and identify the correct check-in area. If you are unsure where to go, the airport information desk is in the middle of the departure hall and operates 24 hours a day.
What happens next depends mainly on two questions: have you already checked in, and do you have luggage to check?
If you need to check in at the airport
For international flights, check-in usually opens 3 hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before departure. Go to your airline’s assigned desk with your travel documents ready.
The airline may check your passport, booking details, destination documents and baggage. If your checked baggage exceeds your allowance, you may need to complete the airline’s excess-baggage procedure. Once check-in and baggage drop are complete, continue towards security.
Already checked in online?
If you have only hand luggage, Tbilisi Airport says you can proceed directly to security after online check-in. If you have a checked bag, you still need the appropriate baggage-drop or airline counter.
Some airlines have their own rules for online check-in and boarding passes, so check your carrier’s instructions before travelling.
Self-service check-in machines
Tbilisi Airport also has self-service machines that can be used up to 5 hours before departure. The airport currently lists Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines and Air France among the airlines available through them.
The machines can help with seat selection and printing a boarding pass, but they do not accept checked baggage. A suitcase still has to go to the airline counter. This is a convenience, not a reason to arrive five hours early.
Security comes next
After check-in and baggage drop — or immediately if you are already checked in with hand luggage only — continue to security. Keep your boarding pass and passport accessible.
Your hand luggage and belongings will be screened. The airport advises passengers to pack their own luggage, keep it under observation and never carry packages for strangers. If you are travelling with an unusual item, check the current airport and airline restrictions before leaving rather than relying on an old packing list.
Passport control for international departures
Clearing security is not the end of the formalities on an international flight. Allow time for passport control before reaching the departure area.
This is why the 60-minute check-in deadline should never become your arrival plan. A short queue at the airline desk does not guarantee a short queue everywhere else.
Find your gate — and keep checking it
After passport control, check the airport screens for your flight and gate. Find where it is, estimate the walk and keep an eye on boarding information because gates can change.
Your departure time is not your boarding time. Boarding begins earlier, and the gate can close before the scheduled departure. Follow the deadline shown by your airline and boarding pass.
Very early or late-night departure
The airport operates around the clock, so an overnight departure does not change the basic sequence inside the terminal. What can change is how you get there because public transport availability varies by hour.
If you still need to decide how to reach the airport, use our Tbilisi Airport transport guide and apply the route in reverse for your departure time.
If you need special assistance
Passengers who require mobility or other special assistance should contact their airline in advance. Tbilisi Airport asks passengers requiring assistance to notify their airline or travel agent when booking and, where possible, at least 48 hours before the flight. Some medical arrangements can require more notice.
In this situation, arriving earlier is not a substitute for arranging assistance in advance.
Bottom line
You do not need to memorise Tbilisi Airport. Remember the order: check-in or baggage drop → security → passport control → gate → boarding.
The airport recommends arriving 2 hours before departure; international check-in normally opens about 3 hours before the flight and usually closes 60 minutes before departure. The closing time is a deadline, not a comfortable arrival target.
Check your airline’s rules, arrive with your documents ready and leave enough margin for the parts of the process you cannot control.
